A new footbridge has been officially opened in the Pomposo community of the Obuasi East Municipality, significantly improving safety and accessibility for local students and residents.
The bridge was constructed by Underground Mining Alliance (UMA), a major contractor for the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine, as part of their corporate social responsibility initiatives. The new structure will ease pedestrian movement across a problematic area, eliminating a long-standing safety hazard.
Speaking at the brief commissioning ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi East, Hon. William Kofi Adzowu, expressed his deep gratitude to AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine and UMA for their support and timely action. He noted that the site had previously been considered a “death trap” and praised the companies for their intervention.
Hon. Adzowu used the occasion to appeal for the reconstruction of similar footbridges in the Akaporiso and Brahabebome areas.
He also took the opportunity to outline several other major development projects that AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has earmarked for the Obuasi East Municipality. These planned initiatives include:
A health facility to be located near the Municipal Assembly’s administrative block.
Teachers’ quarters at Diawuoso.
A Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) facility.
A Model School.
