Obuasi East Marks Fourth Edition of National Sanitation Day

The Obuasi East Municipal Assembly has successfully observed the fourth edition of the National Sanitation Day, a government-led initiative aimed at reviving monthly clean-up exercises to improve public health and environmental cleanliness.
The exercise, which took place on Saturday, August 2, 2025, was hosted at the Boete Electoral Area and drew massive community participation. The program forms part of ongoing efforts to combat poor sanitation – one of the major causes of cholera outbreaks – and to instill a culture of cleanliness as a shared national responsibility.

As part of the exercise, commercial activities were suspended from the early hours of the morning until 11:00 AM, with residents expected to join in the clean-up activities.

Strong Community Participation
Speaking during the exercise, the Municipal NADMO Director, Mr. Moro Musah, expressed satisfaction with the turnout. He noted that since the reintroduction of National Sanitation Day, community members, particularly the youth, have shown strong commitment to the program. He emphasized that directives on restricted vehicular movement and temporary closure of shops must be respected, warning that those who defy the rules will face lawful sanctions. “If everyone takes this exercise as a personal duty by keeping our drains, gutters, and surroundings clean, flooding will be a thing of the past in the municipality,” he added.

Call for Responsibility and Sanctions
The Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Mr. James Gamor, also commended participants for their active involvement. He highlighted the persistent challenge of waste disposal, stressing that while waste generation is inevitable, indiscriminate disposal of refuse is unacceptable and poses serious threats to environmental health and safety. He cautioned that individuals who flout sanitation directives will be dealt with according to the law. He further called on Traditional leaders, Clergy, and Imams to continue preaching the importance of sanitation to their communities, stressing that leadership is key in promoting a culture of cleanliness.

Community Appreciation
The Assembly Member for Boete Electoral Area, Hon. Barnabas Peprah, praised the government for reviving the National Sanitation Day initiative, describing it as a strong reminder of the importance of keeping the environment clean.
He extended his appreciation to the Obuasi East Municipal Chief Executive, staff of the Assembly, and all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the clean-up exercise in his community.
