In a proactive move to enhance administrative efficiency and grassroots representation, the Obuasi East Municipal Assembly recently concluded a two-day customized certificate training course focused on “Next Generation Local Governance Leadership.”
Held from August 13 to August 14, 2026, the workshop was specifically tailored for Assembly Members to deepen their understanding of their statutory obligations, sharpen their leadership skills, and refine strategies for optimal community engagement.
Building Stronger Local Leaders
The intensive program served as both an educational retreat and a reflective workshop. Facilitated by seasoned experts from the prestigious Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS) notably Mr. Antwi Joseph and Mr. Akuamoah Boateng the curriculum covered a comprehensive range of critical governance modules:
Legal & Legislative Frameworks: Decentralization laws, the executive mandates
of MMDAs, discretionary powers, and the drafting and enforcement of local by-laws.
Oversight & Corporate Governance: Meeting procedures, deliberative functions,
and upholding accountability within the Assembly.
Community Mobilization: Leadership strategies for driving local change-making
projects, public engagement, and clear civic communication.
Career & Network Building: Identifying career growth pathways in public
service, preparing for future national leadership roles, and fostering peer-to-peer
networking.
Beyond classroom instruction, the interactive sessions offered Assembly Members a rare platform to share personal field experiences, debate common challenges, and brainstorm collective solutions for the municipality’s development.
A Timely Intervention for Community Impact
Expressing gratitude on behalf of his colleagues, the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Hon. Alfred Ofosu Donkor, commended the municipal administration for prioritizing capacity building for its elected representatives.
“This training has enlightened us on so many fronts and brought critical governance details to our attention tools that will directly help us execute our mandate effectively for the people we serve,” Hon. Donkor remarked during the closing ceremony.
By bridging the gap between theoretical local governance laws and practical community leadership, the Obuasi East Municipal Assembly aims to set a high standard for responsive, transparent, and accountable local administration moving forward.
