In a landmark move to improve the working conditions of teachers within the Obuasi East Municipal, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. William Kofi Adzowu, has presented a major consignment of office furniture to the Municipal Education Directorate.
The gesture, aimed at boosting morale and enhancing classroom delivery, represents a shifting focus toward a group often overlooked in traditional educational donation drives: the teachers themselves.
A Teacher’s Empathy in Action
Speaking at the ceremony to hand over the items, Hon. William Kofi Adzowu revealed that the initiative was deeply personal. Having spent years in the classroom himself, the MCE explained that his past as an educator was the primary catalyst for the intervention.
“We often see generous donations of desks and learning materials directed solely at students, while the teachers who sit at the heart of the learning experience are left with inadequate furniture,” Hon. Adzowu observed. “The teacher also deserves better. If we want our children to excel, we must first dignify the profession and comfort those who teach them.”
To back his words with action, the MCE handed over a comprehensive set of high-quality office furniture to the Directorate, consisting of:
250 teacher’s chairs
125 sturdy matching tables
20 premium swivel chairs for administrative heads and senior staff
Transforming Obuasi East’s Educational Infrastructure
Beyond the immediate relief of the furniture presentation, Hon. Adzowu outlined an ambitious infrastructural roadmap designed to modernize the municipality’s schools.
Recognizing that the Education Directorate itself is operating under severely constrained conditions, the MCE announced plans to construct a brand-new, ultra-modern office complex that reflects the dignity and stature of the directorate.
Other upcoming and ongoing projects highlighted by the MCE include:
Renovation of classroom blocks at St. Cyril’s Anglican School , Akaporiso.
Construction of 40-seater ultra-modern water closet for Independence cluster of schools at Brahabebome.
Fencing and constructing of entrance, construction of Boys and Girls dormitory, 12 – Unit classroom block and science laboratory all at Christ the King Catholic Senior High School.
“An Unprecedented Gesture”
Receiving the items on behalf of the schools, the Municipal Education Director, Mr. Kwabena Owusu Nketia, expressed profound gratitude to the MCE and the Assembly, describing the donation as “unprecedented” and a historic first for the municipality.
Mr. Nketia lauded the MCE’s visionary leadership and acknowledged the consistent support the Directorate has enjoyed from both past and present leadership of the Municipal Assembly.
Addressing the state of their current administrative headquarters, Mr. Nketia did not mince words, humorously but pointedly describing their wooden office block as a “Guggisberg Office” a reference to colonial-era wooden structures. He expressed immense relief at the MCE’s promise to construct a modern office complex, noting that a better working environment would radically improve administrative efficiency.
The Director concluded by promising that the beneficiary schools would maintain the items with the utmost care.
“We will ensure that our Headteachers take strict responsibility and proper care of these chairs and tables, so they serve their purpose for years to come,” Mr. Nketia pledged.
